Michael Foley is an economist at the SHARP program at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. He conducts research into the way that alternative employment arrangements, such as temporary and precarious work, can affect injury risk in the workplace. He has also studied the economic and social impacts of occupational injury on workers and their households over the long run as well as the effectiveness of compliance inspections and consultations to improve safety. His research integrates workers??? compensation and unemployment insurance data with field- and survey-collected data. His research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and he is a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
